One Step at a Time

Learning the research process, ending in a research paper, can be very intimidating for students. Students have so many steps, they don't know where to begin, especially when they want so desperately to get to the end. So I have the students complete one step at a time, asking students to complete an online quiz. Here is an example:

The answer is emailed to me and I can respond to each student individually, helping them move to the next level of the project. I use Discovery School Quiz Builder. It's free.

Inspiring kids with Inspiration

This is a terrific software tool students can use to create outlines and graphic organizers for both writing and reading comprehension. http://www.inspiration.com/


My students often use Inspiration when they need to write nonfiction paragraphs, essays, or short stories. Inspiration allows them to choose how they want to plan their paragraphs. They can use many different kinds of graphic organizers, or they can create outlines.

Cooperative Learning/Teamwork Skills

Students are often thrust into teams but lack skills to accomplish teamwork successfully.


Question: How do individual contributions affect teamwork results?

1) Reflect on past personal issues within teams. 2) Share issues. 3) Create a carousel walk using chart paper or laptops during which students brainstorm possible solutions to the issues. 4) Rank solutions using INTEL Education Initiative and discuss results – in terms of efficacy – and provide reasoning for the ranking individually. 5) Compare your ranking with your team members. 6) Team members discuss results. 7) Whole class discussion about the ranking and efficacy of results. 8) Create a skit of the issue for role play before the class. 9) Present skits. 10) Team & whole class discussion of next steps – group roles and group norms.
